Enhanced Bus Services Planned For Newport From October
Two enhanced bus services are set to be introduced in Newport from October, with almost £1 million of funding required to support them over five years.
Southern Vectis is proposing changes to routes 38 and 39 following a review of the town's existing bus network and passenger numbers.
The number 38 will run between Carisbrooke and Newport Bus Station via Cedar Hill, Whitepit Lane and St John's Road.
The number 39 will serve areas including Carisbrooke High Street and Sylvan Drive Sainsbury's.
The Isle of Wight Council says the changes are designed to improve connections and access to public transport across Newport.
The revised services are planned to operate from October 2026 until the end of September 2031.
The council says the new Route 38 will respond to demand for a service along Whitepit Lane, while improving links between residential areas and destinations including Newport town centre, ASDA, Pan and Carisbrooke.
Route 39 is intended to improve coverage across western Newport, while providing a simpler route that complements the 38.
Southern Vectis says £957,000 will be needed to fund the services over the five-year period.
The council has agreed to use developer contributions earmarked for sustainable transport and public transport improvements to support the plans.
The proposals were developed following consultation with Southern Vectis, local councillors, Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council, the Isle of Wight Bus and Rail Users' Group and other stakeholders.
