Outstanding Verdict For Isle Of Wight Special School’s Social Care

‘Outstanding’ is the verdict of a recent Ofsted report on an Isle of Wight special school’s social care.

St Catherine’s School in Ventnor provides ‘highly effective services’, with its actions contributing to ‘significantly improved outcomes’ and positive experiences for children and young people, inspectors concluded, after visiting the school from January 20 to 22.

Students at St Catherine’s, who are between the ages of nine and 19, have speech, language and communication needs.

Residential accommodation is provided in three houses on the Grove Road site, with 14 out of 94 students at the school accessing it.

St Catherine’s received three ‘outstanding’ ratings for the overall experiences and progress of children and young people, how well children and young people are helped and protected and the effectiveness of leaders and managers.

Ofsted’s report said:

“Students feel secure, valued and understood because their living spaces reflect who they are and communication aids help them navigate their environment confidently.

“The homely atmosphere and accessible resources in each house promote belonging, engagement and positive daily experiences, supporting their emotional wellbeing and development.

“Students enjoy a consistently warm and nurturing atmosphere, where staff understand and respond to their individual needs.

“Independence is promoted through communication, self-care and daily routines, with a strengths-based approach helping students to build skills and confidence.

"Personalised care that builds on student’s strengths supports meaningful progress.”

A point for improvement highlighted by inspectors was that leaders should ensure children have a clear plan covering their individual and welfare needs.

They said the plan should include records of routine universal health checks such as age appropriate immunisations, dental health and hearing and eyesight checks.
