Care leavers on the Isle of Wight are receiving strong support from children’s services, but some are still living in unsuitable and unsafe accommodation, according to Ofsted.
Inspectors reviewed support for young people aged 18 to 25, focusing on housing, help into adulthood and services for those with disabilities.
They found that most care leavers are in stable and suitable homes, with praise given to staff for building strong relationships and offering a wide range of support.
Improved services introduced since the last inspection in 2023 were also highlighted, along with particular strengths in support for disabled young people and former unaccompanied asylum-seeking children.
However, Ofsted says a “small but significant” number of care leavers are living in poor conditions, with some experiencing loneliness and repeated homelessness.
Inspectors say more work is needed to improve the availability and quality of accommodation, as well as ensuring young people have a stronger voice in shaping services.
The report also notes a gap between planned support and how some young people experience it in practice.
The Isle of Wight Council says it recognises the challenges around housing and is committed to making improvements, while welcoming the positive feedback on the progress made so far.
