A man has been banned from attending football matches after running onto the pitch during the derby between Portsmouth and Southampton Football Clubs.
Richard Conaghan climbed over advertising boards at Fratton Park during celebrations for the first goal in January before walking across the pitch towards away supporters.
Stewards quickly escorted the 34-year-old, of Portsmouth, off the field.
Conaghan later pleaded guilty to entering the playing area at a designated football match when he appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court on Monday (16 March).
He was handed a three-year Football Banning Order, preventing him from attending any matches in the UK during that time.
Police say the action sends a clear message that behaviour which risks the safety of players, officials and fans will not be tolerated.
Chief Superintendent Simon Dodds, the gold commander for the high-profile match, praised the swift actions of stadium security and police officers. He emphasized that while passions run deep during historic rivalries, pitch invasions pose a direct risk to players, officials, and spectators. The police noted that pursuing these cases through the courts serves as a strict deterrent to ensure future fixtures remain secure and free from disruption.
