Island Roads will restart its road improvement programme early in the New Year, with several significant schemes getting underway from Monday 5 January.
Work will begin on Newport Upper High Street and Binstead Road on that date, while the major project to improve the main road through Wroxall will also resume.
All of the schemes involve deeper excavations than usual to tackle underlying problems that have caused the roads to deteriorate.
As a result, full 24-hour road closures will be in place for the duration of the works.
Binstead Road
Major sections of Binstead Road between Ringwood Road and Gwydyr Close are set to be upgraded.
Phase one, covering Ringwood Road to Stonepitts Close, is scheduled between 5–30 January.
Phase two, between Stonepitts Close and Gwydyr Close, is expected to run from 13–24 April.
The programme has been split to accommodate separate Southern Water works at Elenors Grove.
A signed diversion route will be in place via Station Road, Briddlesford Road, Mersley Road, Mersley Down Road, Brading Down Road, New Road, Brading High Street, Rowborough Lane, Beaper Shute, Brading Road and Marlborough Road.
Drivers are asked not to cut through the Binstead estate, as these roads are unsuitable for heavy traffic.
Upper High Street, Newport
The Upper High Street will be closed between the Pyle Street and St James’ Street junctions, effectively turning the area into a temporary pedestrian zone.
Work is expected to take eight working days, excluding weekends. To help businesses, Mill Street will temporarily become two-way between High Street and Lugley Street, although there will be no access onto the High Street itself.
The town centre diversion is via Gunville Road, Forest Road and Medina Way.
Wroxall
Following a pause over Christmas and New Year to support local trade and give residents a break, work to rebuild and resurface the main road through Wroxall will also restart.
This phase covers Station Road to Coombe Park. During the works, the main access out of Wroxall will be via Ventnor, so drivers are advised to allow extra travel time.
Island Roads has thanked residents, motorists and businesses for their patience and says it will keep the community updated. It also warns that weather and ground conditions may affect the schedule.
