A project team involving the Isle of Wight NHS Trust has been recognised with a major regional award after delivering a significant digital transformation programme across healthcare services.

The Pathology LIMS Project Teams at Isle of Wight NHS Trust and Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust picked up the Digital Transformation of the Year award at the South East Digital Skills Development Network (SDN) Awards 2026.

The award was presented during last month’s South East Connect Conference at Epsom Downs Racecourse and celebrates innovation and impact in digital healthcare across the South East.

The winning project introduced a new Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), replacing an older system with a modern digital platform designed to improve the way pathology information is managed and shared.

The new system went live on the Isle of Wight in June 2025 and at Portsmouth in November 2025, supporting more than 430 pathology users across both trusts.

NHS leaders say the transformation has improved patient safety, reduced manual processes and strengthened infection control reporting.

It has also helped clinicians access pathology data more efficiently, allowing earlier decision-making and reducing unnecessary duplication of tests.

Working through the Southern Counties Network, the system enables healthcare teams across organisations to view pathology results more easily, helping improve patient care pathways.

Judges praised the project’s scale, technical delivery and collaborative approach, while also recognising its potential to be used elsewhere in the NHS.

Josh Cliff, Chief Digital Officer at Isle of Wight NHS Trust and Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, said:

“This award reflects the dedication and collaboration of everyone involved.
“The LIMS programme has delivered real benefits for patients and staff while creating a resilient digital platform for the future.”

The South East Digital SDN Awards recognise individuals and teams helping shape the future of digital healthcare through innovation that improves services for patients and staff.
