Islanders and visitors are being reminded to “Know Where to Go” for medical help this August bank holiday, to make sure they get the right care and avoid putting extra pressure on A&E.

St Mary’s Hospital expects to see a rise in patients at its Emergency Department over the long weekend – including people who could be better treated elsewhere.

Emergency Departments should only be used for life-threatening injuries or conditions. For anything less urgent, people are encouraged to:

  • Use NHS 111 online or call 111 for advice.

  • Speak to a local pharmacist for help with minor illnesses.

  • Wait to see a GP for ongoing conditions, diagnosis, and referrals.

Chief Nursing Officer Hayley Peters said:

“Using the right NHS service means people are likely to get help more quickly.
"With higher numbers of people visiting the Island, we want to ensure our emergency departments remain available for those who need urgent, life-saving care.”

Many common illnesses and minor injuries in children – such as coughs, colds, sore throats, earaches, stomach bugs, scrapes and grazes – can often be managed safely at home or with pharmacy advice.

Keeping a well-stocked first aid kit is also recommended.

🩺 Pharmacies will be open across the Island over the bank holiday weekend.
