The Isle of Wight community is this week mourning the passing of Tony Russell, affectionately known to many as 'Mr Mouse', who passed away unexpectedly yesterday (Monday).
Tony had an extraordinary 48-year career at the Wight Mouse Inn, dedicating nearly half a century to the pub that became synonymous with his warmth, humour, and generosity.
Tributes have been pouring in from across the Island, reflecting the immense impact Tony had on everyone who knew him.
One visitor wrote:
“RIP Tony. I remember the early days of the Wight Mouse when Tony used to collect glasses; too young to drink and work behind the bar.
"He was such a big part of the Wight Mouse and will be so missed. Such a lovely person.”
Another tribute shared heartfelt memories of fun and laughter:
“Goodbye Tiger — got all the marvellous memories of our trips to London, Bath, Southsea and the pics to remember, the lock-ins, the fancy dress, and the games nights.
"Such a wonderful kind man, an angel with a wicked sense of humour."
Long-time patrons also reflected on Tony’s remarkable ability to make everyone feel valued, even decades after first meeting him:
“He worked at my wedding in 1983 and remembered it forty years later, (he was a) lovely man" one tribute recalled.
"(We have) been coming to the Wight Mouse for 40 years and even though there may have been a few years in between visits, he always recognised us and carried on our previous chats like we spoke the previous day.
"We will miss him terribly.”
The Wight Mouse Inn had previously broken the sad news, with the following heartfelt tribute:
"It is with utmost sadness we are heartbroken to share the news of the unexpected passing of our beloved colleague and friend Tony, aka Mr Mouse.
"Many of you will have known Tony during his remarkable 48 years of loyal service to The Wight Mouse Inn.
"Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this saddest of times.
"RIP Tony Russell (09/10/1964 - 23/03/2026)."
