The Isle of Wight Crematorium is opening its doors to the public for a special open day, giving residents the chance to explore its peaceful grounds and find out more about the services it provides.

The event will offer guided tours of the site, including the opportunity to see behind the scenes and learn more about the care involved in cremation services.

Staff will be on hand throughout the day to answer questions and explain the process.

Set within tranquil ancient woodland, the crematorium is designed as a quiet space for reflection, remembrance, and support for bereaved families.

The open day will also mark a major milestone, celebrating 65 years since the crematorium first opened on 19 May 1961, with the first cremation taking place shortly after on 30 May 1961.

To mark the anniversary, staff will be dressed in 1960s clothing, with music from the era playing and classic vehicles on display in the car park.

Janice Lord, the council’s registration and bereavement services lead, said the event is about helping people better understand the work carried out on site.

She said:

“This open day is a wonderful opportunity for us to connect with the community, showcase the serene environment we have created for remembrance and reflection, and highlight the comprehensive care and support we offer.
“We also want people to learn more about the history of the crematorium and the work being done to preserve and enhance the wildlife and natural surroundings.”

The Isle of Wight Crematorium is managed by the council’s Bereavement Services team, which provides support to visitors in a compassionate and professional setting.

The open day will take place on Saturday 30 May 2026, between 11am and 3pm, and everyone is welcome to attend.
