The Isle of Wight could experience its hottest day since records began tomorrow, with forecasters warning temperatures may reach as high as 38 degrees Celsius in some parts of the Island.

The Isle of Wight Met Service says temperatures are expected to climb into the mid-30s across most areas, with central parts of the Island and Newport likely to see the highest readings.

A Level 5 Maximum Heat Alert has been issued for almost the entire Isle of Wight, indicating temperatures are expected to exceed 32C during the afternoon.

Forecasters predict temperatures of 35C to 36C will become widespread, with a small number of locations potentially reaching 37C or even 38C if conditions develop as expected.

If those temperatures are recorded, the event would rank among the most extreme heat episodes ever experienced on the Island.

Unlike many inland parts of the UK, the Isle of Wight's coastal climate usually delivers more moderate summer temperatures, with average highs typically in the low 20s.

As a result, experts warn that many residents and visitors may find the conditions particularly challenging.

Health officials have already issued a Red Heat-Health Alert for the South East, warning of a significant risk to life during the peak of the heatwave.

People are being urged to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day and take extra care of vulnerable relatives, neighbours and pets.

Those working outdoors, older people, young children and anyone with underlying health conditions are being advised to take additional precautions as the Island braces for what could be a record-breaking day.
