Islanders are being urged to take extra care as a Red Heat-Health Alert comes into force across the Isle of Wight amid forecasts of exceptionally high temperatures.

The UK Health Security Agency has issued its highest-level warning for the South East from the early hours of Wednesday until Thursday night, while an Amber Heat Health Alert is already in place.

A red alert is reserved for severe conditions where there is a significant risk to life, not just for vulnerable people but across the wider population.

Residents are being advised to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day and keep homes cool by closing curtains and windows exposed to direct sunlight.

People are also being encouraged to check on elderly neighbours, friends and relatives who may be more vulnerable to the heat.

With many expected to head to the coast, safety experts are reminding people that cold water can be dangerous, even during a heatwave.

Swimmers are being urged to enter the water gradually, avoid alcohol and stay at lifeguarded beaches where possible.

Kate Harvey, the Isle of Wight's Director of Public Health, said hot weather can pose serious health risks and urged Islanders to take simple precautions to stay cool, safe and well over the coming days.

Health officials are also reminding people to watch for signs of heat exhaustion, including dizziness, headaches, heavy sweating and intense thirst, and to seek help if symptoms worsen.
