No School Closures Planned Despite Extreme Heat Forecast

The Isle of Wight Council says no schools have reported plans to close despite forecasts that temperatures could reach as high as 38C on Wednesday.

Parents have raised concerns about conditions inside classrooms as the Island braces for what could be one of its hottest days on record.

The council says there is no legal maximum temperature for school classrooms, but schools are expected to take reasonable steps to protect pupils during periods of extreme heat.

Measures may include encouraging children to drink plenty of water, adapting outdoor activities, improving ventilation and making temporary adjustments to the school day where necessary.

Any decisions on school trips or activities will be made by individual schools following risk assessments, with parents contacted directly if plans need to change.

An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson said schools have a duty to safeguard pupils' health and wellbeing, adding that no closure notifications had been received for Wednesday.
