Two new homes are set to be created behind a shop in Ryde town centre after planning permission was granted for the conversion of part of a historic building.

The applications, submitted by Mr M Sen, cover 68 Union Street, where the retail space will be reduced to accommodate two residential properties at the rear.

Each home will have two bedrooms, a kitchen and a bathroom.

The 19th-century building is currently occupied by Fantastic Stores and was previously used as an art gallery.

A planning statement said the development would provide homes in a location close to public transport, offering alternatives to travelling by car.

The council concluded the conversion would not harm the setting of the listed building or the character of the Ryde Conservation Area.

A basement will remain available for storage, while a utility area will be created for the shop.

The council also said the reduced retail space would not affect the shop's viability or the overall vitality of Ryde town centre.

Three conditions have been attached to the approval to ensure the work respects the building's architectural and historic importance and complies with planning requirements.
