Horsebridge Hill — the main route between Cowes and Newport — remains closed by police this morning (Thursday) due to an ongoing incident.

A cordon is in place and the public is being urged to avoid the area, with the closure — along with a separate incident on Rew Street in Gurnard — forcing traffic onto Pallance Road and causing severe congestion.

The closure was initially put in place between Noke Common and Stag Lane at around 11.40pm last night (Wednesday) with police, paramedics and fire crews at the scene.

A cordon was subsequently established, and members of the public are urged to avoid the area while the situation is dealt with.

Emergency services are unable to provide further details at this stage.

Summary

  • Southern Vectis has confirmed its Route 1 buses are diverting via Whitehouse Road in both directions until the road reopens.

  • The situation remains ongoing, with a continued police presence at the scene.

  • Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary is expected to release further details when available.

  • Horsebridge Hill remains closed, with diversions currently routing traffic — along with vehicles displaced by the separate Rew Street closure in Gurnard — onto Pallance Road, causing significant congestion.

  • Southern Vectis reports that traffic in the area is “at a standstill,” with Route 1 buses facing major disruption.

  • To help ease delays, a shuttle service is operating between St Mary’s and Newport at frequent intervals.

More updates will follow as information becomes available.
