A fox cub has been rescued on the Isle of Wight after a complex and emotional operation involving homeowners, volunteers and utility staff.

The incident began after a distressed resident raised the alarm about a fox cub which had fallen into a garden pond and was found struggling in the water.

The homeowner managed to retrieve the animal and wrap it in a towel before contacting help.

Wildlife volunteer Dave was called to the scene and collected the cub, taking it straight to The People’s Vet, where it was confirmed the animal had aspirated water.

The cub was placed on medication and is expected to recover before being transferred to the RSPCA Isle of Wight for ongoing care.

In a separate but related rescue effort, another fox cub had earlier been reported trapped within a drain network after homeowners heard repeated noises coming from underground.

Rescuers spent several days attempting to locate the animal, even briefly spotting it after lifting a drain cover, before it retreated deeper into the system.

Volunteer Dave later joined the operation, alongside a Southern Water crew member, as efforts intensified to trace the cub’s movements using inspection equipment.

In a creative twist, a Ring doorbell camera was used inside the drain system to help monitor the cub’s location and prevent it from moving further through the pipework.

After an estimated six-hour final rescue effort, the exhausted cub was eventually contained between two manhole covers and safely retrieved.

The animal, later nicknamed Penny, was found to be cold and weak following the ordeal.

She was taken to Carisbrooke Vets where she received antibiotics, fluids and further treatment.

Those involved in the rescue have thanked everyone who assisted, including local residents and Southern Water staff, praising their determination in helping save the cub.
