Residents in Ryde are being urged to prepare for possible flooding in the Monktonmead area overnight, with up to 80mm of rainfall expected in the coming hours.
The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for the area, warning that intense rainfall could lead to surface water and river flooding if the heaviest downpours reach the Isle of Wight.
While the precise path of the rain band moving across southern England remains uncertain, there is a significant risk of flash flooding in low-lying parts of Ryde, particularly around Marymead Close and the Simeon Street Recreation Ground.
To help manage the potential impact, the Environment Agency has plans to install drop boards at Simeon Street Recreation Ground to create a temporary water-holding area if required — a precaution aimed at preventing the kind of flooding seen in October 2023.
Residents who are vulnerable to flooding, or live in areas with poor drainage, are advised to take early action by fitting flood protection measures ahead of the rain’s arrival.
River levels and flood risks are expected to begin falling by 1pm on Thursday (23rd October 2025).
The public is also being reminded to avoid low-lying roads near rivers, which may quickly become impassable during heavy rainfall.
