The vice chair of the Isle of Wight Council, Vanessa Churchman, is facing competition from five challengers as voters prepare to head to the polls on May 7.

Standing against the Conservative incumbent in the Haylands and Swanmore ward are Peter Douglas Cameron Banks (Green Party), Simon Peter Haytack (Labour), Les Kirkby (Reform UK), Malcolm Ross (Liberal Democrats) and Sandy Stephens (Independent).

The Local Democracy Reporting Service invited all candidates to submit a 100-word statement ahead of the election.

Green Party candidate Peter Banks, who was born and raised on the Isle of Wight, says he is committed to supporting all aspects of Island life.

A resident of Haylands, he highlights his experience in planning and finance, as well as his involvement with national forums linked to energy and nuclear regulation.

He is also a professional musician and volunteers at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway.

Incumbent councillor Vanessa Churchman says she has represented the area since 2005, with the exception of a four-year period between 2013 and 2017.

A former owner of Bembridge Art Gallery, she has also served as a governor at Haylands Primary School since 2007 and was involved in the development of its new site.

She also points to her role in the redevelopment of Smallbrook Roundabout and her current position as vice chair of the council.

Labour candidate Simon Haytack is a local small business owner and experienced hospitality manager.

He says he is passionate about supporting the community and helping local businesses to grow.

Reform UK candidate Les Kirkby and Liberal Democrat Malcolm Ross did not provide statements.

Independent candidate Sandy Stephens, who was born and educated in Ryde, has worked in the financial sector and as a local business owner.

A former Ryde town councillor, he says he is committed to representing the community with an independent voice, supporting young people and ensuring care for older residents.

The election will take place on May 7.
