Emergency services personnel who responded to a fatal helicopter crash on the Isle of Wight - that left three dead and one seriously injured - have been praised by the region's Police and Crime Commissioner.
As previously reported by Isle of Wight Radio, a Robinson R44 light helicopter crashed from altitude into a hedge on the edge of Shanklin Road yesterday (Monday).
Multiple fire appliances, ambulances, police units - and helicopters from HM Coastguard and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance - all responded to the scene at just after 9:30am.
It's understood several other Air Ambulances from across the south of England were also placed on alert - with some scrambled - but were stood down enroute.
Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, only one of those board survived the incident and was flown to Southampton University Hospital in a serious condition. There's not yet been any update on their condition.
Responding to yesterday's emergency services effort, Police and Crime Commissioner, Donna Jones, said:
“My deepest condolences go out to the families and loved ones of the three people who tragically lost their lives in the helicopter crash near Ventnor on the Isle of Wight this morning. My thoughts are also with the fourth individual who remains in hospital in a critical condition.
“This is a devastating incident that has deeply shocked the local community. The families affected are being supported during this incredibly difficult time.
“I want to thank all of our emergency services for their swift and dedicated response, including Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, and hospital staff.Â
"The Air Accidents Investigation Branch has now launched a formal investigation into the crash, and we await further details as they work to understand what happened.
"This is a heart breaking day for the Isle of Wight, and my thoughts remain firmly with everyone affected."
Investigations into the incident are due to continue today, with experts from the Air Accident Investigation Branch on the Island.
