Firefighters were called out to help motorists last night (Sunday) after several vehicles became stranded in deep floodwater on the outskirts of Ryde.
Heavy downpour over a short period led to flash flooding in a number of locations across the Isle of Wight, with more than 35mm of rain recorded.
The incident happened on Pondwell Hill, between Appley and Nettlestone, where two vans and a car became stuck in fast-flowing floodwater reported to be several feet deep.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene with two fire appliances and a rescue tender to assist those involved.
One of the drivers said they rounded a corner and were unable to see the extent of the flooding before driving into the water.
As of last night, the road remained impassable until conditions improved.
Elsewhere on the Island, motorists were also reported to have become stranded due to flooding at Briddlesford Road near Downend and Coach Lane in Brading, although no rescues were required at those locations.
Drivers are being urged to take extra care, avoid flooded roads, and never attempt to drive through standing or moving floodwater.
