Emergency services were called to Fairlee Road, Newport, this afternoon (Monday) following a two-vehicle collision.

Police and ambulance crews attended the incident on North Fairlee Road, near Binfield, after reports of a crash involving a Toyota Aygo and a Volkswagen Sharan shortly after 2pm.

Both vehicles sustained significant damage in the collision, with airbags deploying in the Toyota.

The incident happened as roads across the Isle of Wight remain particularly busy following the end of the Isle of Wight Festival, with thousands of people travelling to ferry terminals to leave the Island.

The temporary one-way traffic system on Fairlee Road, introduced for the festival period, had only recently been lifted before the collision occurred.

A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary said officers were called at around 2.23pm to reports of a crash involving two vehicles.

Minor injuries have been reported.

Southern Vectis route 5 services towards Newport were diverted via Lushington Hill, Station Road and Staplers while emergency services dealt with the incident.

Motorists experienced delays in the area and were advised to seek alternative routes where possible.

Police enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the collision are ongoing.
