A large garden fire that spread into woodland behind homes in Ventnor prompted a major emergency response on Tuesday evening.

Fire crews from Ventnor, Ryde, Shanklin and later Cowes were called to Spring Hill shortly after 8pm after reports of a developing blaze in enclosed woodland behind a row of residential properties.

Around 20 firefighters tackled the fire, which initially affected an area measuring around 20 metres by 20 metres.

The flames spread from decking to a large tree and surrounding undergrowth, with crews using main jets and hose reel jets from above and below to prevent the fire spreading further.

By around 9.10pm, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the blaze had been brought under control, with firefighters continuing to damp down the charred woodland.

The affected area later grew to around 50 metres by 20 metres, with four fire appliances and a 4x4 light pump remaining at the scene.

Three main jets and two breathing apparatus sets continued to be used during the operation.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established.

Spring Hill remained closed in both directions while emergency services dealt with the incident, with traffic and Southern Vectis buses diverted.

The fire service is reminding people to dial 999 immediately if they spot a countryside fire and not to attempt to tackle anything larger than a small fire that could be safely extinguished with a bucket of water.

Residents are also being urged not to discard cigarettes in the countryside, to remove bottles and broken glass that could magnify the sun's rays, and to take extra care when using barbecues by only lighting them in designated areas and ensuring they are fully extinguished after use.
