The owners of a Totland Bay bed and breakfast are calling for urgent action over fires and disposable barbecues being lit on the beach below their property during the current hot, dry weather.

David and Jane Blake, who own The Hermitage on Cliff Road, say they are concerned a fire could spread to the wooded cliff above, putting homes, businesses, wildlife and people at risk.

They say they have repeatedly noticed fires being lit using driftwood and disposable BBQs on the beach south of Totland Bay, near the old lifeboat house.

The couple said smoke from one fire earlier this month filled their hotel, with similar incidents continuing throughout the day and into the evening.

In a letter sent to a number of authorities, including the Isle of Wight Council, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, they warned the dry conditions mean a fire could spread rapidly through the woodland.

They are calling for "No Fires or BBQs" signs to be installed in the area to help prevent incidents before they happen.

The couple also raised concerns about smoke affecting nearby residents, many of whom have windows open because of the hot weather.

They say they hope action can be taken to prevent a potentially serious incident before it is too late.
