A family and their two dogs have been forced out of their home after a late-night fire in Sandown left the property severely damaged.

The blaze broke out shortly before midnight at an address in Fort Mews, with emergency services called to the scene at around 11.20pm on Friday (17 April).

Fire crews from Sandown and Shanklin attended a confirmed kitchen fire, with firefighters wearing breathing apparatus using hose reel jets to bring the flames under control.

Crews also checked neighbouring properties to ensure there was no further risk before standing down at around 12.30am.

The fire is said to have caused extensive smoke damage, with the family losing most of their belongings.

They, along with their two pets, have since been placed into temporary accommodation.

A GoFundMe page has been set up by a friend in a bid to help the family rebuild their lives. The fundraiser, which has a target of £800, has so far raised £375.

Writing on the page, organiser Jo said she was “absolutely devastated” for her friend and her children, adding that any contributions would be “very gratefully appreciated”.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
