Drainage works on Fairlee Road are expected to cause disruption for motorists and residents, with the route set to close for up to 11 days.
Councillor Matthew Price, who represents Fairlee and Whippingham, says the road is one of the busiest on the Isle of Wight, with traffic using it around the clock.
He says any works on the route are likely to have a significant impact, not only on those living in the area but also on people travelling across the Island for work, school and other daily activities.
Councillor Price says he was only made aware of the planned works on the day they were publicly announced, but has since been working behind the scenes to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum.
The closure comes after months of ongoing roadworks across the Island, including at Horsebridge Hill, Eleanors Grove and Quarr Hill, which have already led to congestion in several areas.
During the works, Fairlee Road will be closed to through traffic, but access will be maintained for residents, businesses and key services.
This includes access to homes, schools, Seaclose Park, the Arboretum, Island Harbour, the Crematorium, care homes, Mountbatten Hospice, council offices, and nearby businesses including the Premier Inn, Beefeater, Skates and The Bargeman’s Rest.
Pedestrian and cycle access will also remain in place, with the cycle path along the old railway line staying open. Cyclists may be asked to dismount briefly near the works.
Councillor Price has apologised to residents, particularly those living closest to the works, and thanked them for their patience.
Further works may also take place in the area at the same time, involving Island Roads, Southern Water and Crown Park, including planned improvements on the Racecourse approach to the Whippingham roundabout.
