Motorists heading into Newport are facing significant delays this morning (Monday), with queues stretching for around four miles following the closure of Fairlee Road.

The key route is shut for the next 11 days to allow for new water and sewerage connections to be installed, forcing traffic from East Cowes, Wootton and Ryde to divert via Staplers Road.

The diversion is creating a bottleneck at Snooks Hill and Coppins Bridge, with congestion building along Staplers Road and Whiterails Road back towards Wootton Common.

Delays are also being reported beyond the roundabout, with traffic backing up along Park Road, Station Road, Whippingham Road and towards Racecourse Roundabout.

Bus operator Southern Vectis has warned of disruption to its Route 5 and 9 services, advising passengers to allow extra time for their journeys.

The road closure is in place due to the scale of the works, which involve excavating deep trenches.
