The annual subscription for garden waste collections on the Isle of Wight could rise from £102 to £120.

The proposed £18 increase has been included in a report by the council’s strategic director of community services, Simon Moon, as the authority looks at ways to increase income and address financial pressures.

The report estimates the change could generate an additional £178,200 over three years from 2027/28.

That calculation assumes the higher charge would lead to a 10 per cent drop in subscribers.

The council says there is potential to raise more money if more customers continue with the service, although affordability and the risk of people cancelling their subscriptions have been identified as concerns.

The report states that the frequency of collections and existing service standards would remain unchanged under the proposals.

Further analysis, including comparisons with other areas, an assessment of demand and equality considerations, would be needed before a final decision on charges is made.

The proposed increase forms part of a wider package of savings and income-raising measures being considered by the council.

Councillors on the Environment and Community Protection Committee will discuss the proposals at County Hall on Thursday, October 29, from 5pm.

The committee is being asked to support referring the plans to the Policy, Finance and Resources Committee as part of the council’s budget-setting process.
