Year-Round Camping Plans At Adgestone Spark Concerns From Residents

Proposals to extend operations at Adgestone Campsite, near Sandown, have prompted 11 objections from members of the public.

Applicant John Perez, of Nationwide Lodges, is seeking to remove two conditions attached to a planning permission granted in 2002.

The changes would allow the campsite to operate throughout the year rather than seasonally, while also permitting alternative access routes to the site.

The application follows the campsite's reopening under new ownership after a four-year closure, with significant investment made in upgrading its facilities.

Mr Perez says allowing year-round holiday stays would meet growing customer demand, support approximately seven or more full-time jobs and generate additional income for the Island.

He also argues that allowing vehicles to use the campsite's lower entrance when necessary would help ease difficulties along the narrow Lower Road.

However, neighbours have raised concerns about the potential impact on the surrounding countryside.

Resident David Godolphin warned that additional traffic, activity and lighting could affect the tranquillity and rural character of the Isle of Wight National Landscape.

Another neighbour, Janette Lymn, highlighted the impact of overnight lighting, particularly during the darker winter months.

She said:

"Over the winter period, however, the effect will be exacerbated, causing distress and disruption to wildlife as well as the sleep patterns of neighbours."

Brading Town Council has expressed support for the application but wants strict conditions attached to any approval.

Its suggestions include restricting accommodation to holiday use, limiting stays to six consecutive weeks per year and requiring an up-to-date register of occupants.

A decision is currently expected by December 22.
