A Labour candidate who will stand in the Lake North by-election next month has launched a petition to improve a dangerous junction in the town.

Emily Brothers issued a statement in relation to the petition this week.

She said:

“The Fairway/Lake Hill junction is dangerous, particularly for pedestrians.
“Local people and visitors alike are telling me about their concerns about the hazardous junction of The Fairway with Lake Hill and Sandown Road.
"They are anxious about crossing the busy complicated roads and worry about safety for young people with The Bay School nearby and sports facilities also on The Fairway.
“I find that junction impossible to cross as a disabled woman even with brilliant support from my guide dog, Truffle.
"In order to get from A to B, I have to go out of my way to cross further along one of the roads and then comeback.

"Not everyone can walk that distance, whilst others will try to cross because it seems convenient.
“Motorists find the junction difficult to navigate sagely. They tell me the road scheme is confusing and pedestrians cross unpredictably at various points.
“It is important that Isle of Wight Council and Island Roads deliver solutions, including the introduction of traffic calming measures on The Fairway, in order to keep local people safe.
“I don’t have a fixed view on a resolution to this longstanding concern but feel that some redesign with traffic lights is a possible way forward. It may be necessary to reposition bus stops and other important features.
“This will be a priority should Lake North residents elect me to represent them.
"The starting points is to ask Islanders to signal their support for improvements. So, I have launched a petition asking Isle of Wight Council in conjunction with Island Roads to work with members of the community to find solutions for this dangerous junction.
"In turn, I will work hard with all concerned, including residents, businesses and community groups to develop the area.”
