The Duke of Edinburgh visited Ventnor on Thursday (16th April) as part of a trip to learn more about arts and heritage organisations on the Isle of Wight.
During the visit, His Royal Highness spent time at two of the town’s key cultural venues – Ventnor Exchange and Ventnor Arts Club – where he met staff, volunteers and members of the local community.
At Ventnor Exchange, discussions focused on the town’s well-known fringe festival, as well as the work of Brave Island in supporting young people with training and opportunities.
Plans were also shared for Ingrams Yard, which is set to become a new community and learning space.
Following a performance from the Exchange’s Community Choir, The Duke made his way to Ventnor Arts Club.
There, he met a range of groups including Jack’s Comedy Club, the Book Group and Ventnor Film Society, and spoke with staff and members about the wide variety of events hosted at the venue.
Founder Stephen Izatt said it was a great opportunity to discuss the club’s programme, including National Theatre Live, Royal Ballet and Opera screenings, and live broadcasts from New York’s Metropolitan Opera, adding that The Duke showed a strong knowledge of theatre.
The visit also highlighted the transformation of two historic Ventnor buildings – a former bank and post office – which have been brought back to life as thriving cultural spaces at the heart of the community.
