Island Roads is urging motorists to follow the official diversion route during ongoing highway improvement works on Binstead Road in Ryde.
The appeal comes after large numbers of vehicles have been cutting through the Binstead Estate, despite the residential area not being designed to cope with high volumes of traffic.
Island Roads says the situation is creating safety concerns, with reports of vehicles mounting pavements and damage being caused to grass verges as drivers struggle to pass along the estate’s narrow roads.
A spokesperson for Island Roads said the signed diversion route, although longer, is better suited to handle all types of vehicles and higher traffic volumes.
“We appreciate the official diversion is a longer route, but it is suitable for all types of vehicle as well as higher volumes of cars,” they said.
Isle of Wight councillor for Ryde West, Ian Stephens, also urged drivers to use the diversion.
“I would ask motorists to follow the diversion route, which is well signed,” he said.
“While buses are able to use the estate to maintain a vital service during the works, there are currently too many cars using these residential roads.”
Highway improvement works on Binstead Road are due to continue until Friday, 30 January, before pausing to allow Southern Water works to take place at Elenor’s Grove.
Island Roads is then expected to resume work on 13 April for a further two weeks.
The official diversion route is via Station Road, Briddlesford Road, Mersley Road, Mersley Down Road, Brading Down Road, New Road, Brading High Street, Rowborough Lane, Beaper Shute, Brading Road and Marlborough Road.
