Police were called to an incident of anti-social behaviour in Newport on Sunday morning after reports of disorder in St James’s Square.

Officers attended at around 11:46am on January 18, where they found two intoxicated women playing loud music and being verbally abusive to members of the public.

Local Beat Bobby attended the scene alongside PCSOs and a police constable.

To deal with the situation, an Inspector authorised a dispersal order under Section 34 of the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014.

This gives police the power to direct individuals to leave a specific area for a set period of time.

The order was put in place for 24 hours, and both women were issued notices banning them from returning to the town centre.

Police say that if they do return within that time, they will be arrested and could be required to appear before magistrates.

Isle of Wight Police say they regularly patrol Newport and will continue to take action against anti-social behaviour.

Anyone who witnesses similar incidents is encouraged to report it via the Hampshire Police website, or by calling 101 for non-urgent matters.
