Two long-serving Cowes RNLI volunteers, Lou and James Rankin, have married, returning to the lifeboat station where their journey together began 14 years ago to celebrate.

The couple first met in March 2012 while serving on the station’s crew.

Lou went on to volunteer for over 11 years across boat and shore crew, education, and visits team roles, while James served as boat crew for a couple of years.

Both were on duty when Queen Elizabeth II officially opened Cowes RNLI station in July 2012.

After reconnecting on Valentine’s Day four years ago, the couple tied the knot on Saturday, 14th March 2026, at the Island Sailing Club, before taking a short walk to the RNLI station for photos.

Lou said:

"The RNLI is fantastic for meeting new people, and today brought back lovely memories.
"I never thought I’d meet my husband through volunteering, but look at us now!"

Lou and James live in Cowes with their labradors, Stanley and Ruby, and remain passionate supporters of the RNLI.

Lou has also spent nine years volunteering with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, continuing her commitment to service.

Mark Southwell, Cowes RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager, attended the wedding and commented:

"Once you join the RNLI family, you are part of it for life.
"Volunteering provides more than training — it offers a lifelong support network. Congratulations to Lou and James from all of us at the station."
