Red Funnel Launches Later Sailings For Theatre-Goers In New Trial

Isle of Wight residents will be able to enjoy more time at some of the South Coast’s biggest theatre shows thanks to a new trial from Red Funnel.

The ferry operator has teamed up with the Solent Transport Users Group (STUG) to launch Theatre Lates — a programme of later Red Jet sailings designed to help passengers avoid missing the end of performances or rushing to catch the final service home.

The initiative follows feedback from customers and STUG, who highlighted the challenges some Islanders face when attending evening shows on the mainland, particularly when relying on public transport connections.

As part of the trial, selected theatre dates will see the usual 10.30pm sailing from Southampton delayed until 11pm, with the return Red Jet from West Cowes departing at 11.35pm instead of 11.05pm.

The current Theatre Lates schedule includes:

• 19 September – The Car Man by Matthew Bourne

• 17 October – Moulin Rouge! The Musical

• 21 November – Operation Mincemeat

• 19 December – Robin Hood with Ashley Banjo and Diversity

• 23 January – Blood Brothers

• 20 February – Mrs Doubtfire

• 20 March – The Full Monty

If the trial proves successful, Red Funnel says more dates could be added for future productions including Cats, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and Back to the Future The Musical.

Red Funnel Operations Director Neil Chapman said the scheme was created after listening to customers and working with community partners.

He said:

“When STUG shared concerns about the challenges people faced getting home after a night at the theatre, it felt like a problem worth solving together.

“This trial is a direct result of those conversations and demonstrates what's possible when we listen to our customers and work collaboratively with our communities.

“We hope Theatre Lates will help more Islanders enjoy a great night out without worrying about the journey home.”

STUG Chair Bronwyn Hamilton Brown said the initiative would help remove some of the barriers Islanders face when accessing cultural and leisure opportunities.

She said:

“This initiative came from conversations about the practical barriers Islanders can face when trying to enjoy a night at the theatre.

“Transport links aren't just about getting people to work, school or appointments, they're also about enabling people to enjoy the cultural, social and leisure opportunities available to everyone else.

“We're pleased Red Funnel listened to our concerns and worked with us to develop a solution that enables theatre-goers to enjoy a night in Southampton without worrying about how or when they’re going to get home.

“We hope this trial proves successful and demonstrates the value of working together to make cultural and entertainment opportunities more accessible to Island communities.”
