Cats Protection has launched a UK-wide short story competition, inviting writers to submit imaginative tales celebrating the special bond between cats and humans.
Stories can be heartwarming, magical or mysterious, but must feature cats at their core.
Entries will be judged by acclaimed authors Jane Fallon and Anne Twist, TV presenter and mental health advocate Gail Porter, and comedian Matt Richardson.
Gail Porter said:
“Cats have a magical place in my heart.
"I’m delighted to be involved in a competition that celebrates the wonderful stories about what makes cats so special. I can’t wait to read them all.”
Winning entries will be published in The Cat magazine and on Cats Protection’s website.
Winners in both the children’s and adult categories will also receive a £350 Cult Pens goody bag and a visit to a Cats Protection adoption centre to meet cats awaiting rehoming.
The competition is open to residents of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland aged 18 or over.
Stories must be original, in English, and between 250–1,000 words. One entry per person per category is allowed, with a £10 entry fee.
Entries can be submitted until Tuesday 31 March 2026 via Cats Protection’s entry form.
Writers are encouraged to consult Cats Protection’s Cat Welfare guidance to ensure responsible representation of cats.
Abby Jackson from Cats Protection said:
“This competition is a wonderful opportunity to explore the charm, mystery and companionship of cats through storytelling.
"We’re excited to read the creative ways people capture the human-cat bond.”
