Further details are being sought over plans to replace the temporary bollards around HMP Isle of Wight with new security barriers.

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has confirmed funding has been secured to upgrade the current system, which has caused disruption for local residents.

Parkhurst and Hunnyhill councillor Andrew Garratt (Lib Dem) and Isle of Wight West MP Richard Quigley (Labour) welcomed the news – but pressed for clarity on the installation process and timescales.

Cllr Garratt said he had asked the MoJ to confirm whether the barriers would apply only to Clissold Road, or also include Lonsdale Avenue and the back road to Rooke Street.

He also called for proper engagement with residents.

Mr Quigley added:

“The proposed new barriers will still enable controlled access for local residents whilst improving security to the outer perimeter of the prison.
"It should also reduce through-traffic, which has been a concern for both the prison and residents.”

The Prison Service previously said the temporary bollards were installed “to maintain prison security and public safety” during nearby roadworks, but stressed that permanent measures would put an end to road closures.

Both Cllr Garratt and Mr Quigley say they now want the MoJ to provide more information on how and when the new system will be implemented.
