Two women have been arrested after a car crashed into the front garden of a Newport home, bringing down a lamp post and leaving live electrical cables exposed.
Police were called to Long Lane, near the junction with Landscape Lane, shortly before 23:30 on Sunday night (May 24) following reports that a vehicle had left the road.
Officers arriving at the scene discovered a heavily damaged Volkswagen in the garden of a residential property after it had collided with a parked car on the driveway, causing significant damage to both vehicles.
The driver and passenger had left the scene before emergency services arrived.
Due to damage to a nearby lamp post, leaving live cables exposed, crews from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called to make the area safe.
A police dog unit was deployed to trace those believed to have been involved in the collision. Two women were subsequently located at an address on School Lane in Barton.
Following discussions with officers, one woman — suspected to have been driving the vehicle — exited the property through a downstairs window.
A second woman was found hiding in bushes outside the address.
Both women were assessed by paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service for minor injuries before being taken into custody for questioning.
Long Lane remains closed in both directions between Staplers Road and Landscape Lane while the damaged vehicle is recovered and engineers from Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks work to secure the exposed electrical infrastructure.
Representatives from Island Roads are also in attendance.
