An Isle of Wight Church of England school has been praised by inspectors for its inclusive approach to education and strong focus on pupil wellbeing and mental health.

A recent report from the Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS) has highlighted The Bay Church of England School in Sandown for the strength of its Christian vision and the positive impact this has on leadership and school life.

Church of England and Methodist schools are inspected by SIAMS around every five years, with inspectors assessing how effectively a school operates as a church school.

Inspectors said The Bay’s Christian vision inspires leadership marked by ambition and determination, driving continual improvement across the school.

The report highlighted several key strengths, including strong leadership in religious education, which inspectors said results in a “thoughtful, inspiring curriculum” and high-quality professional development for staff.

It added that the school’s Christian vision ensures leaders prioritise the wellbeing and mental health of both pupils and adults, while also shaping curriculum decisions to support pupils with special educational needs and disabilities, as well as those considered vulnerable.

The Bay’s vision is to provide a high-quality education rooted in the principles and practice of the Church of England, within a challenging, stimulating and caring environment for children of all faiths and none.

While the inspection was largely positive, SIAMS identified areas for development, including continuing to improve the quality of collective worship for pupils in Key Stages 3 and 4, so that opportunities for spiritual development are consistently available.

Inspectors also said spirituality should be more deeply embedded to help older pupils reflect on themselves, others and the wider world.

Executive headteacher Duncan Mills welcomed the findings, saying the report recognises the values at the heart of the school.

“We are delighted that the SIAMS report recognises the strength of our Christian vision and the way it drives everything we do at The Bay,” he said.
“Our school vision is to provide a challenging, stimulating and caring environment for children of all faiths and none.
"While we are proud of our Church of England foundation, families do not need to be religious to feel welcome or to thrive here.”

Chair of the governing board, Peter Higgin, said the outcome reflects the dedication of the entire school community.

“We were thrilled to welcome our SIAMS inspector,” he said.
“The outcome is a welcome validation of the hard work of staff, pupils and the wider school community, all of whom shone throughout the inspection.”
