A special day for Barry, the first recipient of Age UK Isle of Wight’s Gift of Friendship programme, has highlighted the power of connection, kindness, and community support.

Barry, born on the Isle of Wight but having spent much of his life on the mainland and abroad, had become socially isolated following the loss of his wife.

Through the Gift of Friendship, part of the charity’s Good Neighbour Scheme, he was matched with a volunteer who helped him get out more, rebuild confidence, and reconnect with others.

As Barry began attending the charity’s Chatty Brew events, he revealed one of his lifelong dreams: to see an owl up close.

His passion for owls dates back to his career as an aeronautical engineer, when he would watch owls nesting in the hangars at Boscombe Down, but never had the chance to see one properly.

With the support of Barry’s family and the team at The Falconry Experience Isle of Wight, his wish was brought to life.

Barry spent an unforgettable afternoon meeting three owls — Rebel, Penny, and Shadow — right from his home.

Reflecting on the experience, Barry said:

“When you’ve dreamed of something for ever and ever and it comes true, you just can’t believe it… That’s made my day. Absolutely.”

Joe Hodgkinson from Age UK Isle of Wight added:

“Barry’s story perfectly illustrates what Gift of Friendship is all about — helping people feel connected, supported, and able to enjoy life again.
"With his volunteer’s support, Barry rebuilt confidence and social connections, and seeing a lifelong wish come true was incredibly special for everyone involved.”

Gift of Friendship, launched in 2025 with support from the Julia Rausing Trust, focuses on helping older people work towards personal goals, enjoy meaningful moments, and combat loneliness through volunteering and companionship.

Barry’s story, now shared on Age UK Isle of Wight’s Facebook page, demonstrates the real impact that friendship, kindness, and community support can have on older residents.
