A former sweet shop in the centre of Ryde could soon be transformed into an antiques store with a stylish new look.
Charlotte Elliott, of Elliott’s Antiques and Collectables, has applied for Listed Building Consent to repaint the front of 49 Union Street — and parts of the interior — in what she describes as a “very tasteful dark blue.”
The proposed colour, she says, would be “much more in keeping” with the Grade II-listed Victorian building and the surrounding Ryde Conservation Area.
In planning documents, Mrs Elliott said the current shopfront looks “neglected, dirty and definitely in need of attention.”
“The shop has been empty for over a year since ‘All Things Sweet’ closed,” she said.
“We’ll be opening an antiques shop instead, and while the bright colours suited a sweet shop, they’re not right for this new use.
"The aim is simply to smarten the place up and make it fit the character of the building.”
Public consultation on the application (25/01451/LBC) runs until 7 November, with a decision expected by 4 December.
