A £4.5 million upgrade to Calbourne Wastewater Treatment Works has been completed, improving the quality of water released into the Caul Bourne stream.
The project includes a new ferric dosing system, a new tank, and upgrades to the site’s reedbeds, which naturally filter wastewater before it returns to the environment.
Southern Water says the improvements will help protect local waterways and contribute to cleaner seas around the Isle of Wight.
Project Manager Taniko Aston-Kolek said the investment would deliver “real environmental benefits”, while contractors thanked local residents for their patience during the works.
The upgrade is part of a wider programme of improvements to Island water quality, with £21m recently invested and a further £99m planned.
A major £17m project at Sandown Wastewater Treatment Works is due for completion by the end of the year.
