MP Calls For Disposable BBQ Sales To Be Suspended During Drought

The Isle of Wight West MP is calling on retailers to voluntarily stop selling disposable barbecues and sky lanterns while drought conditions continue.

Richard Quigley has written to small, medium and large retailers across the constituency following the devastating fire at Headon Warren last month.

He says disposable barbecues and sky lanterns can pose a “significant fire risk” in hot and dry conditions, particularly on the Isle of Wight.

Mr Quigley is asking retailers to temporarily suspend sales of the items during the current high-risk period.

He says some businesses have already taken steps to raise awareness of the fire risk and thanked them for doing so.

Tesco has already responded, confirming it has temporarily removed disposable barbecues from its shelves because of the current drought conditions.

The MP's call follows advice from the Isle of Wight Council and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.

People are being reminded:

• Never use disposable or portable barbecues in the countryside.

• Never light campfires or open fires.

• Dispose of cigarettes and smoking materials safely.

• Take all rubbish home, particularly glass bottles.

• Follow local advice, signs and any temporary access restrictions.

• Keep dogs under close control around livestock and wildlife.

• If you spot a fire, move to safety and call 999. Never try to tackle a wildfire yourself.

Richard Quigley says the appeal isn't about stopping people enjoying the summer, but about reducing the risk of further fires.

He said the best way to support the firefighters who tackled last month's Headon Warren blaze is to follow the guidance and do everything possible to prevent further incidents.

Drought conditions remain in place on the Island.
