Plans Submitted To Demolish And Rebuild Newport Primary School

Plans have been submitted to demolish and rebuild Nine Acres Community Primary School in Newport.

Willmott Dixon Construction has applied on behalf of the Department for Education to replace the existing school buildings with a new two-storey facility.

The current buildings are described as being in poor condition and no longer meeting the needs of the school or current Department for Education standards.

The plans would maintain capacity for 420 primary school pupils and 45 nursery places at Little Acres Nursery.

A Design and Access Statement by HNW Architects says the current layout also creates operational and safety concerns, including delivery vehicles having to travel through the playground.

The redevelopment would include new access and parking arrangements, improved landscaping and better outdoor spaces.

Temporary accommodation would be provided on the existing playing field while construction takes place, allowing the school to remain open.

The planning statement says the project would replace the “outdated structure” with a purpose-built school designed to meet modern educational standards.

The proposed building would be all-electric and designed to be highly energy efficient, with the aim of achieving net zero carbon in operation.

The plans also include biodiversity improvements.

Property consultancy Vail Williams, acting for the applicant, says the development can be carried out without unacceptable impacts on areas including transport, residential amenity, flood risk, drainage, ecology, heritage and archaeology.

Once complete, the new school is expected to provide improved facilities for pupils and staff, as well as a more sustainable environment for the wider community.

Members of the public have until September 14 to comment on the plans.

The application is listed as 26/01066/FUL, with a decision due on November 10.
