A major milestone is being marked by Wightlink this year, as the Portsmouth to Fishbourne ferry route celebrates its 100th anniversary.
The crossing, which has connected the Island with the mainland for generations, first began operating in 1926 and has since become one of the Solent’s most important transport links.
A new film has been released by the cross-Solent travel company to chart the history of the route, from its early days of wooden tow-boats pulled by steamers through to today’s modern hybrid ferries.
Over the past century, the service has evolved significantly — playing a role during wartime, supporting post-war growth and adapting to increasing demand with larger vessels and improved infrastructure.
Key developments include the move to the Gunwharf terminal in Portsmouth, the introduction of larger ferries in the 1960s and 70s, and the creation of Wightlink.
Modern investment has also seen the arrival of advanced vessels such as the Victoria of Wight, helping to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

Today, the Portsmouth to Fishbourne route remains one of the busiest ferry crossings serving the Isle of Wight, carrying commuters, families, holidaymakers and freight between the Island and the mainland.
Residents are being encouraged to share their own memories of using the route as part of the centenary celebrations, with further information available online.
