An auction of artist-designed skateboard decks is raising funds for a new community skatepark in Freshwater.
A total of 43 boards, transformed into original artworks by local creatives, are currently up for bids, with the auction set to close at 8pm on May 9. The winning bids will be announced at a special event at Royal Solent Yacht Club.
The initiative is supporting plans for a new skatepark and pump track at Stroud Recreation Ground, led by Freshwater Parish Council. Organisers say the project will create a lasting community space for all ages and abilities.
Nearly £5,000 has already been pledged, with the highest current bid standing at £460 for “Nautical Compass”, a maritime triptych created by local artist Zoe Sadler. Some of the boards are also on display at a Wightlink terminal.
Cllr Caroline Pakel said:
“We were amazed by the stunning skateboard deck designs created by the artists, and we have continued to be thrilled by the bids that have come in. These really are unique works of art, and we would hate people to miss out on the chance of owning one – there is still time to bid and, in doing so, support the Skatepark project.”
She added:
“This has really become a project that has inspired the community and become a real team effort – our thanks to everyone who has shown their support.”
David Williams from Wightlink said:
“We have been so impressed with the vision and drive behind this project and are delighted to support it. We’ve been outbid for one of the boards - but we’ll be back with a new bid before May 9th!”
