A campaign has been launched across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight to raise awareness of domestic abuse during the World Cup, amid concerns incidents can increase around major football matches.
The Hampshire Domestic Abuse Partnership is urging people to look out for friends, family and neighbours through its “When is kick-off at your place?” campaign, funded by Hampshire County Council Public Health and supported by Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones.
Research has found the risk of alcohol-related domestic abuse rises by 47 per cent following an England victory and by 38 per cent after an England defeat. Overall, incidents of domestic abuse increase by 25 per cent during matches and in the three hours after full-time.
The Commissioner is investing £5.6million this year into projects aimed at supporting victims and tackling violence against women and girls, including services provided by Stop Domestic Abuse.
Donna Jones warned that major tournaments can become a time of fear and isolation for those experiencing controlling, coercive or violent behaviour. She said football itself is not responsible, but heightened emotions and alcohol consumption can create situations where abuse is more likely to occur.
Residents are being reminded that domestic abuse can take many forms, including emotional, psychological, financial and online abuse, as well as physical violence.
Anyone in immediate danger should call 999. Confidential support is also available through Stop Domestic Abuse on 03300 165 112 or online through its website.
