A spectacular new project aiming to harness the power of the sea — and make it accessible to islanders and visitors all year round — could soon take a big step forward.
This Thursday, Isle of Wight councillors will decide whether to give their backing ‘in principle’ to the Isle of Wight Sea Pool (IWSP) — a stunning new saltwater sanctuary proposed for Yaverland.
Described as an “accessible, sheltered, saltwater gem,” the open-air sea pool would transform a 70-metre stretch of Yaverland’s shoreline, nestled between sections G and H of the sea defences near Culver Parade.
The idea? To create a safe, natural swimming space that celebrates the Island’s coastal heritage — whatever the weather or season.
A report heading to the council’s Policy, Finance and Resources Committee reveals that IWSP first approached County Hall in 2023 to explore the idea.
Early support came from council leaders, who saw the project as a potential catalyst for Sandown Bay’s regeneration.
Since then, the team behind IWSP has been busy — engaging with locals, conducting surveys (which showed overwhelming support), and working closely with environmental bodies.
Both Natural England and the Environment Agency have given their in-principle thumbs-up to the plan.
Before a single spade hits the sand, the project still needs to pass several checkpoints: a detailed business case, planning permission, full public consultation, and sign-off from regulators. But Thursday’s meeting could mark the start of something special.
As IWSP puts it:
“Tidal sea pools are a wondrous way of harnessing the sea and making it accessible throughout the year.
"Since the pandemic, people have rediscovered the joy of being at one with the sea — and these sheltered seawater gems are being restored, or created anew, across the country.”
If approved, Yaverland could soon be home to one of those gems — a shimmering tidal pool where swimmers, families, and sea lovers can safely enjoy the ocean’s magic all year round.
Watch this space — the tide of support for this Island-first idea is rising fast.
