A woman suffered burns to her arm after a major fire swept through the roof of a row of bungalows in Newbridge on Monday afternoon (June 1st).

Firefighters from across the Isle of Wight were called to Main Road at around 1pm following reports of a blaze in the roof space of the properties.

Crews from Newport, Ryde, Cowes, Ventnor and Shanklin attended the incident alongside the aerial ladder platform, as thick smoke could be seen billowing across the area.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reel jets to tackle the flames, which spread through the roof of a building comprising four bungalows.

Residents from the affected homes, along with occupants of neighbouring properties, were evacuated while emergency services worked to bring the fire under control.

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed that one woman was treated for burns to her arm following the incident.

With Island crews tied up at the scene for several hours, fire appliances from the mainland were brought across the Solent to provide emergency cover elsewhere on the Isle of Wight.

Firefighters remained at the scene into the evening, removing loose and damaged roof tiles and making the area safe.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and enquiries are ongoing.
