What’s In A Name? Newport And Carisbrooke Down To Become A Town

Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council has officially changed its name to Newport & Carisbrooke Town Council.

The council says the new name reflects Newport's status as the Isle of Wight's county town, while continuing to recognise its links with Carisbrooke and the wider parish.

There will be no change to the council's powers, responsibilities, boundaries or services.

The council manages a range of facilities across the area, including Victoria Recreation Ground, Vectis Fields, Nine Acres, Downside and Clatterford, as well as sports pitches and children's play areas.

It is also responsible for seven allotment sites, four public toilets and community buildings at 64 High Street and Victoria Recreation Ground Pavilion.

The council provides grants to local charities and community organisations, supports youth provision and is involved in projects focused on Newport's heritage, culture and community life.

It also organises events including the Newport Summer Fayre and Newport's Day of Christmas, which features the town's annual Christmas lights switch-on.

Chair of Newport & Carisbrooke Town Council, Councillor Joanne Ballington, said the new name was "clearer and more recognisable" and better reflected the council's role in the community.

The council has already changed the main signage at its High Street offices.

Its website and digital services will be updated shortly, while other signs and branded materials will be replaced over time as part of planned maintenance.

The council says this phased approach will help keep costs down and reduce waste.

For residents, it's being described as "business as usual", with the council continuing to provide its existing services and support communities across Newport, Carisbrooke and the wider parish.
