Forecasters at IW Met Service have issued a weather warning for the Isle of Wight, with heavy rain expected to sweep across the Island from 10pm tonight (Monday).

The forecast comes just days after Islanders enjoyed a spell of warm, sunny weather, with beaches busy and many making the most of long summer days.

The warning predicts heavy rain, with the potential for flash flooding and isolated thunder, affecting around 75% of the Island between 10pm and 5am on Tuesday morning.

Some areas could see torrential downpours, with rainfall totals of around 20–30mm possible in a short space of time.

Residents in areas prone to flooding are being urged to take precautions, with concerns raised over surface water, hazardous driving conditions, and possible localised flooding of homes and businesses.

Forecasters have also warned that debris such as soil, shingle and field run-off could be washed onto roads and pathways, particularly in rural areas.

Motorists are being advised to take extra care overnight and into the early hours as conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly.
