Voters are being reminded to bring valid photo ID when heading to polling stations for elections taking place tomorrow across the Isle of Wight.

The requirement means anyone wishing to vote in person must present an accepted form of identification before receiving their ballot paper. Documents such as a passport, driving licence or certain concessionary travel passes can be used, and expired ID is acceptable if the voter remains recognisable.

Those without suitable ID can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate through their local council, although late applicants may need to consider alternative arrangements.

Polling stations will also offer a private area for voters who prefer their ID to be checked discreetly.

Niki Nixon, from the Electoral Commission, said:

“If you’re planning on voting tomorrow at the English local and mayoral elections, don’t forget to bring photo ID. You’ll need to show it to polling station staff before they give you your ballot paper.”

She added that anyone unable to present ID could appoint an emergency proxy before 5pm on election day.

Polling stations will be open from 7am until 10pm.
